May 11, 2021 – New Moon in Taurus

Today’s New Moon in Taurus provides an opportunity for a grounded, reflective approach to how we want to experience the next six months. With several planets on the verge of retrograde cycles, plus the start of eclipse season with the coming Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius on May 26, now is the time to work on setting intentions.

Here’s the planetary lineup as of today:

Sun, Moon, and Uranus in Taurus

Mercury and Venus in Gemini

Mars in Cancer

Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius

Neptune in Pisces

Pluto in Capricorn

The planetary scorecard:

      • 4 planets in air signs
      • 4 planets in earth signs
      • 2 planets in water signs

We also need to look at modalities: with five planets in fixed signs, there’s a much slower pace. No planets in fire contributes to feelings of indolence, stasis and stagnance. But the Moon in Taurus is here to remind us that sometimes the most beneficial growth and change happens over an extended period of time.

Moon in Taurus

You may remember from my November post on the Full Moon in Taurus that the Moon is exalted in this sign. Taurus, a fixed earth sign, surrounds the Moon with creature comforts. Uninterested in abstract notions of emotional fulfillment, a Taurus Moon says, “What will make you feel good right now, love? A warm bath scented with jasmine and roses? A glass of Bordeaux? How about a slice of chocolate cake?” It invites us to find emotional pleasure in connecting with sensory experiences, and reminds us that the psyche is most open to manifesting when it’s well cared for.

Here’s what Chani Nicholas writes about the Moon in Taurus in her book You Were Born for This:

Planets in their exaltation will tend to get attention for their ability to perform their duty. Here, the Moon is productive, giving, and generative.

With all of this in mind, a Taurus New Moon is ideal for manifesting and setting forth intentions. Even if you’re not planning elaborate ritual work today, you can sit quietly and reflect on what you wish to see manifest in your life by November 2021.

April 11, 2021 – New Moon in Aries

aries new moon, new moon in Aries, Aries moon, moon, new moon, moon cycles, astrology, girl with moxie

Who’s felt fired up over the last 24 hours? Just me? I didn’t think so. The New Moon in Aries is the spark we need to start something new – and what gets started depends on what we most want to manifest over the next 6 months.

Before I talk about today’s Aries New Moon, let’s take a quick look at where the planets are this weekend.

      • Sun, Moon, Mercury and Venus in Aries
      • Mars in Gemini
      • Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius
      • Uranus in Taurus
      • Neptune in Pisces
      • Pluto in Capricorn

If you’re keeping score, that’s 4 planets in fire signs, 3 planets in air signs, 1 planet in water sign and 2 planets in earth signs.* Can this contribute to the burst of energy we may be experiencing? Absolutely. When planets are in fire signs (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius), they take on more assertive, dynamic traits. We see independent action and a tendency to make impulsive, spur-of-the-moment decisions. With Aries, that’s frequently the case. Ruled by Mars, Aries embodies courageousness and is ready to take charge of any situation. Aries’ motto is I AM.

Moon in Aries

If we associate the signs of the zodiac with human life stages, Aries is the infant of the chart: its needs and desires are self-centered and it hasn’t yet learned how to relate to others in a way that is mindful of other people’s needs. Babies don’t hesitate to let their caretakers know when they need attention, whether they are hungry, tired or need a new diaper. When someone is born with the Moon in Aries, every feeling may be treated like it’s an emergency that must be addressed immediately. Once that feeling is expressed, the Aries Moon person moves on.

When the Moon is in Aries, we all may experience a taste of this energy. Our emotional response is quick and incisive. Tempers may flare easily, but burn out just as fast. An Aries Moon encourages us to embrace and express our feelings when we feel them, whether that’s happiness, frustration, sadness, or passion. While that might seem overwhelming to those of us with our natal Moon in air or earth signs, which can lean toward more reserved, thoughtful (and possibly overintellectualized) emotional expression, there’s something to be learned from an Aries Moon: “Get the feelings out and let them go, because feelings are like buses – there’s always a new one coming down the road!”

January 12/13, 2021 – New Moon in Capricorn

new moon in Capricorn, new moon, Capricorn moon, Capricorn new moon, January 2021 new moon, astrology, girl with moxie

The first New Moon of 2021 provides us with a fresh start, a chance to set intentions for the year ahead and begin the work involved in creating change. Where that work begins is on the inside, and where it needs to focus depends on your rising sign.

Moon in Capricorn

When the Moon is in Capricorn it is in the sign of its detriment. We know this because the Moon rules Cancer, and Cancer is the opposing sign for Capricorn. As I’ve written before, oppositions in astrology are like a see-saw: the signs on either end of the see-saw will take turns in prominence. For Cancer and Capricorn, they are seeking balance when it comes to matters of security: do we find that security in our home or in the world?

Capricorn is all about responsibility and doing the work. Ruled by Saturn, it embodies that spirit through being driven to succeed. It is unafraid to learn the rules and follow them. When the Moon is in Capricorn, emotional responsibility is the focus.

I’ve known quite a few Cappy Moon folks over the years – I was married to one when I was in my 20s! The stereotype is that they are cold or unfeeling, and for those of us with more extroverted, expressive Moon placements (*cough* Leo Moon in 3rd house *cough*), we may really believe this to be true. What I’ve personally discovered is that Moon in Capricorn is like a pond covered in ice: there is moving water under the surface, and there are going to be patches where the ice is particularly thin and, with the right amount of pressure, a hole will open up to the water below. If a Capricorn Moon blurts out their feelings on a subject or situation, you can be assured that it’s been on their mind for a long time, it’s a matter of great significance to them, and you need to listen and be empathetic. They are trusting you with their feelings, which they take immense responsibility for and don’t share them with just anyone.

When the Moon is New in Capricorn, the desire for control and responsibility dominates our emotional experience. This lunation encourages us to sit up straight, look our issues in the eye and deal with them -and that includes accepting our emotional response as truth, even if we don’t feel all that comfortable with the feelings that come up. Is it going to be hard? Yep. Will it be worth it? Absolutely.

If you know your rising sign, here’s a rundown of where the New Moon in Capricorn may affect your life, and where you should consider setting intentions and goals for the coming months:

  • Aries Rising – career, fame, reputation
  • Taurus Rising – personal philosophy, spirituality and beliefs; higher education
  • Gemini Rising – regeneration, transformation, death
  • Cancer Rising – relationships and partnerships
  • Leo Rising – work and work environment, service, health
  • Virgo Rising – creativity & creative pursuits, children, where you find & seek pleasure
  • Libra Rising – home, family life, your past, ancestors
  • Scorpio Rising – communication skills & tools for communicating with others, sibling relationships, short trips
  • Sagittarius Rising – finances, material possessions, self-esteem
  • Capricorn Rising – physical appearance, self-awareness
  • Aquarius Rising – subconscious thoughts & feelings, karmic debts
  • Pisces Rising – friends and social groups, hopes, goals

You can also read that list for your Sun sign, which will also be impacted, though maybe not as strongly. (Not sure about your rising sign? Visit https://chart.chaninicholas.com/ to generate your natal chart for free.)

Winter Solstice & The Great Conjunction: Resources, Links and Musical Interludes

Jupiter, great conjunction, Jupiter conjunct Saturn, astrology, girl with moxie

The last week has been a busy one, astrologically speaking. To recap:

  • December 15 – Venus enters Sagittarius
  • December 17 – Saturn enters Aquarius
  • December 19 – Jupiter enters Aquarius
  • December 20 – Mercury enters Capricorn
  • December 21 – the Sun enters Capricorn, marking the beginning of the Winter Solstice (Northern Hemisphere) and Jupiter is conjunct Saturn, aka the Great Conjunction

What does it all mean? To put it very simply, change is here – but it’s going to take some time to roll out.

I know enough about astrology to know that I couldn’t even begin to explain the significance of the Great Conjunction. With that in mind, I’m going to go with my strengths as a networker & gatherer of information and share links from several resources. These astrologers are extremely knowledgeable and can help you understand what’s going on astrologically:

Chani Nicholas’s horoscopes for the Winter Solstice & Great Conjunction

The Winter Solstice is a great day for setting intentions for what you want to manifest in the coming months. If you’re new to intention setting, this article by Deepak Chopra is a great place to start with the process.

Be mindful that any changes you want to see, whether in yourself or in the world around you, will take time to manifest. Don’t let that stop you from setting intentions, though. When I first started on my spiritual path, I got an annual reading from a psychic who would always tell me, “Ask the universe for what you want, then get out of the way! Go get the oil changed in your car, paint your nails, just do something else!” I’m sure you can find plenty to do that won’t infringe upon the universe’s work. Cleaning is always a good option. I’m slightly joking.

Have a wonderful Capricorn season, and may your winter be everything you want and need!

Wednesday Wisdom: Acknowledge Your Creativity & Genius

power of intention, Wayne Dyer, affirmations, intention, manifesting, oracle cards, personal growth

Once a week or so, I pull a card from my Power of Intention deck. This 50-card deck uses content from Wayne Dyer’s book, The Power of Intention, alongside vintage/retro drawings, to explore concepts that he discusses at length in the book. It’s a great companion to the book and has helped me considerably in my own personal growth and spiritual practice.

This morning’s Power of Intention card is Acknowledge Your Creativity and Genius. “The qualities of creativity and genius are within you, awaiting your decision to match up with the power of intention. Genius is a characteristic of the creative force that allows all of material creation to come into form. It is an expression of the divine.”

Once again I laughed at the results of my card pull, as it’s definitely what I needed to see today. A couple months ago, I began shifting my focus for this 16-year-old blog toward more spiritual and personal growth content, and it’s brought me a lot of creative fulfillment and joy to write more content that aligns with this new focus. That said, there are a few key tasks that I have yet to complete, and I’ve had a long list of excuses as to why those tasks haven’t been done – the latest of which is ongoing pain in my right shoulder. (Watch your body alignment while doing yoga, folks! Especially if you are over 40!)

But the truth is that I am working through some deep-seated fear related to my self-worth, and a long-standing desire for outside validation. These things manifest in indecisiveness and procrastination when it comes to matching up with the power of intention. And I believe it’s also manifested as pain in my shoulder.

Calvin Coolidge, quotes, persistence, determination, nothing in the world can take the place of persistence, personal growth

There’s a quote by Calvin Coolidge that I’ve loved ever since I first read it:

“Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not: unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”

This quote has been a powerful motivator – and yet that motivation does nothing if that initial decision isn’t made to align with intention.

Once we acknowledge and address the fears and beliefs that keep us blocked, we get the power boost necessary to match up with intention and it sets us off on our journey toward self-awareness and spiritual growth. By allowing our creativity and genius to travel alongside persistence and determination, using intention as our compass, we will reach our destination.
